Handstand Help
Oh the coveted handstand. A handstand is the foundation of all elements in gymnastics. It is an image of yogic mastery. Epitomizing strength and balance, handstands are utilized in both CrossFit and contortion yet in very different ways. Lately everyone seems to want to kick up their heels to stand on their hands, and with that an astonishing amount of handstand tutorials (of varying qualities) have surfaced. What I haven’t seen with the surging popularity of handstands is a discussion on a handstand’s different functions, and utilizing different techniques for different outcomes.
Before you begin your handstand journey, it is important to understand the purpose of what you are learning this skill for. Is it to sustain balance? Will you be traveling in this handstand? Is handstand merely a shape you will passing through for sport? Techniques for handstands change based on your desired goal. Training for power skills will be different than training for precision of limited movement. Please note that quick tips and TikTok tricks, while pleasing to algorithms, aren’t a reliable or safe source source for learning. They are frequently conflicting and incongruent techniques designed to ‘get likes’ over delivering instruction. Having a coach that understands different goals, and the different methods to attain them, is the best bet for your skill development.
