TikTok goes the Osteoporosis Clock: Prevent Bone Loss in 4 Simple Steps

Every October I enjoy the abundant Halloween displays of spooky scary skeletons, which prompts my thoughts about bone density.

Did you know...

  • Peak bone mass is acquired by late teens/early 20s!

  • After age 30, new bone formation is exceeded by bone resorption (a.k.a. bone breakdown).

  • Osteoporosis is "a silent disease" currently affecting over 10 million Americans.

  • Osteoporosis-related bone breaks cost patients & the American health care system approximately $19 billion annually.

  • If you have engaged in restrictive eating pattern cycles, you are at a higher risk for osteopenia/osteoporoses.

As ominous as those numbers sound, I have good news for you! Osteoporosis is preventable through these simple steps:

  1. Engaging in weight bearing exercise and resistance training. (Sorry swimmers!)

  2. Consuming enough calcium and vitamin D rich foods, while following nutritional guidelines for macro & micronutrients.

  3. Limiting bone demineralizing substances, like coffee and alcohol.

  4. Refraining from smoking! (This includes cigarettes, vaping, cigars…)

If you have questions on how to implement any of these steps, I am here for you. I welcome your inquiries on how to prevent bone loss, and how to stay motivated in the fight against osteoporosis. As member of the Bone Health and Osteoporoses Foundation, I stay up to date on the latest research for training with low bone density. Finding safe ways to maintain your bone health is important to me, and hopefully to you too.
